Detroit Kung Fu Academy
“There has to be a concept to serve the people in Detroit and if you have that down, you can really be ahead of the game because the barriers to start a business are so low.”
Owen Matson is the owner of Detroit Kung Fu Academy and has been operating his business for nearly 10 years now. It’s located in Eastern Market and provides people the ability to learn and practice martial arts and self defense. Since first opening in 2005, Matson has noticed a significant change in the atmosphere of Eastern Market. Previously it held more risk for crime and violence, but now it has changed to demonstrate a more positive place within the city.
“Your business has to have it’s own draw. You can’t rely on walk-by traffic,” Matson says. And this is what makes his business so unique; it fits into a certain, rare niche within the city. Martial arts training and self-defense is an underserved market in the area, helping his business to stand out.
Matson suggests new owners or owners-to-be to keep that same concept in mind. There has to be something that pulls people in and once you have that, you are on your way to a successful business.
